The Nakumbuka Celebration
was held at The Mico College
in Kingston, Jamaica on February 20 - 21, 2003 and February 24 - 25,
2005 with great success.
'Nakumbuka' is the
Swahili word for 'I remember' and the celebration is designed to
acknowledge and sanctify those millions of Africans who perished in the
middle passage. As far as we know, there is no shrine or monument any
where in the western hemisphere to commemorate this loss; it is as if
our parents died and we did not bury them. Such a lack is robbing the
race of incalculable energy and is contributing to our myopic sight in
so many critical matters.
The celebration
in Jamaica consisted of a ceremonial exercise as well as cultural displays
in many forms; for example, art exhibition, poetry recitation, culinary
displays, lectures, book launching, drumming, dance and so on.
This celebration
was very expensive to mount. The purpose of this letter is to solicit
your financial support.
Thank
you in anticipation of your contribution; we on our end will do everything
in our power to retain the energy for which your contribution was intended.
