POTTERY

Artist: Vilya Thomas

Jamaican born artist Vilya Thomas displays, in her work a fondness for and fascination with garden images from the environment in which she exists. She formalized her training and graduated with First Class Honours (Upper) from the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, in 2004, after engaging in leisure pottery for a number of years.

Her work celebrates mainly Jamaican and other tropical flora in surface design and form. She creates using wheel thrown, moulded and free form methods from local stoneware clay and casting slip as well as imported earthenware clays. Vilya is constantly exploring new design ideas that make her work different and refreshing.
