EMANCIPATION FROM THE MIDDLE PASSAGE

'Nakumbuka' is the Swahili word for 'I remember'.

The Nakumbuka celebration will be held in Kingston, Jamaica, W.I. in February 24 - 25, 2005.

The celebration of Nakumbuka

  1. will act as a ceremonial reminder of the millions of Africans who perished in the African slave trade and the middle passage, particularly those who resisted;
  2. will serve to link us to our African past in a more reverent way;
  3. will give us a sense of greater historical and cultural depth, thus fostering greater longevity in our planning and deeper contemplation before action; and
  4. will inculcate greater regard for human life and greater sensitivity to the benefits of family life.

Main events will include:

  • a vigil at the Marcus Garvey shrine and a march from the shrine to The Mico College;
  • a ceremonial function at the College;
  • a symposium;
  • a cultural event featuring poets, drummers, story-tellers etc. featuring the best that African culture has to offer.
