EMANCIPATION FROM THE MIDDLE PASSAGE

'Nakumbuka' is the Swahili word for 'I remember'.

The Nakumbuka celebration will be held at The Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston, Jamaica, W.I. on Thursday, February 17 - Friday, February 18, 2011.

The celebration of Nakumbuka

  1. will act as a ceremonial reminder of the millions of Africans who perished in the African slave trade and the middle passage, particularly those who resisted;
  2. will serve to link us to our African past in a more reverent way;
  3. will give us a sense of greater historical and cultural depth, thus fostering greater longevity in our planning and deeper contemplation before action; and
  4. will inculcate greater regard for human life and greater sensitivity to the benefits of family life.

Main events will include a:

  • ceremonial function at the The Jamaica Conference Centre;
  • symposium;
  • cultural event featuring poets, drummers, story-tellers etc. featuring the best that African culture has to offer.
